Solution

Explanation: Since this is a long answer question, divide the answer into 3 portions.
  1. A short introduction about the Indus Valley Civilisation.
  2. Talk about the discovery of the Indus Valley Civilisation.
  3. End with a short, lucid conclusion.
Ans. The Indus Valley Civilisation, also known as the Harappan Civilisation is one of the earliest known urban cultures in the Indian subcontinent. The civilisation developed around 4700 years ago. It is well known for its urban planning skills.
The Indus Valley Civilisation was accidentally discovered in pre-independent India when some rail workers accidentally stumbled upon a pile of bricks while laying down railway tracks in the Punjab region of pre-independent India. The first site to be discovered was Harappa in 1921.
The two main sites of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro were excavated by archaeologists R.D. Banerjee and Daya Ram Sahni under the direction of Sir John Marshall, the then director of the Archaeological Survey of India.
The discovery of the Indus Valley Civilisation opened a new chapter in the history of the Indian subcontinent.
