Drawing the diagram of the situation:

  1. A group of rays of light is called a beam.
  2. Because light travels in a straight line and it is better to represent it with the help of a ray.
  3. Light rays from a point source of light travel in all directions, moving away with time. Such a beam of light is called a divergent beam of light.
  4. Divergent beam the rays spreads and follow different paths

Hence, when a large number of rays i.e beam is emerging from a point source of light, then the beam is called a divergent beam.
