Solution

The caste system in India is a system of social hierarchy which has ancient origins. The main features of this system are

1. There are four castes, Brahmins, Kshyatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras, in that order of hierarchy.
2. The initial division was based on the nature of work. Brahmins were responsible for conducting religious rites and the education of people, Kshyatriyas were responsible for military duties, Vaishyas for trade and Shudras for manual labour like agricultural work.
3. However, over time, the system became hereditary.
4. There was also a fifth group, called Untouchable, who were regarded as being outside the caste system. The Untouchables were responsible for jobs which were considered unhygienic, like cremating the dead.
