Question

What do you observe when:

Dilute hydrochloric acid is added to sodium thiosulphate

Open in App
Solution

The reaction of sodium thiosulphate (Na2S2O3) with dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) gives the following reaction:

Na2S2O3+2HCl2NaCl+SO2+S+H2O

The reaction is not balanced as the total number of sodium is not balanced on the reactant and product sides. We write 2 before HCland before NaClto make the reaction balanced.

Na2S2O3+2HCl2NaCl+SO2+S+H2O
