Gold metal is highly malleable and very thin sheets can be hammered from it. In rutherford's experiment a avery thin gold foil (about0.00006 cm thick) was used.
The alpha particles were able to penetrate through this highly thin gold foil.
If some other malleable metal is used alpha particles may not be able to penetrate through these thicker foils.
