What do you understand by the greenhouse effect? What are the major greenhouse gases?

The warming of the earth due to re-emission of sun’s energy absorbed by the earth followed by its absorption by $C{O}_2$ molecules and $H_{2}O$ vapour present near the earth's surface and then its radiation back to the earth is called the greenhouse effect.

Though $C{O}_2$ is the main gas in the greenhouse effect, there are some other greenhouses gases also like methane, chlorofluorocarbons, ozone, nitrous oxide, and water vapour.
