A chromosome is a DNA molecule made up of some or all of an organism's genetic material. Chromosomes are present in the nucleus of every cell and it is packed in thread-like structures. Structurally, each chromosome is made up of DNA tightly wrapped around special proteins called histones.
Trisomies occur when a person receives an extra chromosome. The most common trisomy in humans is chromosome 21, also known as Down syndrome, in which people have three copies of chromosome 21.
The sex cells divide so that they have only half the normal genetic information. Trisomy in which a person has 47 chromosomes instead of the ideal 46.
Some common types of trisomy are Patau's syndrome, Down's syndrome, Edward's syndrome, and Warkany's syndrome 2.
