Question

What does + (plus) mean in organic chemistry

Open in App
Solution

Dear student

The minus or plus sign in parentheses indicates the optical rotation, (+) means the molecule rotates linear polarized light clockwise, (-) means it rotates counterclockwise.

And second, mean is that the + or - sign represent formal charges. When a chemical is positively or negatively charged then the plus or minus symbol is always written after the chemical symbol such as the chloride-ion is written Cl- and sodium ion is written as Na+ .
