What does single pulley mean and explain its working.

Pulley:

  1. A pulley is a wheel with a flexible rope, cord, cable, chain, or belt attached to its rim.
  2. Pulleys can be used singly or in groups to transmit energy and motion.
  3. Sheaves are rimmed pulleys with grooves.

Working of pulley:

  1. A pulley can help you reverse the direction of your lifting force if you have a single wheel and a rope.
  2. As shown in the illustration below, you pull the rope down to lift the weight up.
  3. If you want to lift something weighing 100kg, you must apply a force equal to 100kg, which is 1000N. (newtons).
  4. To lift the weight 1m into the air, pull the loose end of the rope a total distance of 1m at the other end.
