Solution
Nucleopolyhedr o virus (NPV):
Nucleopolyhedrovirus (family Baculoviruses) are a genus of pathogenic viruses that have gained importance in integrated pest management. They are used as insecticides.
Benefits and usage:
These viruses are used for the biological control of pests, especially insects and other arthropods, because of the following reasons:-
Species-specific: The virus is pathogenic only to the arthropods.
Narrow spectrum: Do not attack non-target insects, other plants and animals.
Eco-friendly: Due to being a narrow spectrum insecticide, beneficial insects are not killed, allowing the viruses to be used in the environment without any dire consequences. Therefore, it is used as a biological method of pest control in Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
