Acrosome reaction:

  1. The reaction during which the sperm reaches the egg and allows the sperm to break the surrounding jelly coat is known as the acrosome reaction.
  2. The acrosome is the cap-like structure present at the head of the sperm.
  3. It contains several proteolytic enzymes such as hyaluronidase and acrosin.
  4. The acrosome reaction is very essential for the interaction of the male and the female gametes.
  5. This reaction is required for the penetration of sperm through the zona pellucida of the ovum and then enters into the cytoplasm of the ovum.
  6. This reaction is also responsible for the completion of meiotic division in the secondary oocyte.
