Question

What happens if there is no mucus in the Oesophagus ?

Open in App
Solution

The cells in the oesophagus produce mucus which helps in the movement of the food in the downward direction by peristalsis. When there is no mucus production, the cells in the lining of the oesophagus will dry out. This will cause obstruction in the smooth passage of the food. Sometimes, there will be the loss in the functioning of the muscles in these regions resulting in the problem in the forward movement of food.
