Question

What happens in the S phase?

Open in App
Solution

Stages in S phase:

  1. The S phase of the cell cycle occurs before the interphase and is involved in DNA synthesis or replication.
  2. In this way, the genetic material of the cell is replicated before entering mitosis or meiosis, leaving enough DNA to divide into daughter cells.
  3. S phase is not initiated until the cell passes the G1 phase.
  4. The most important event that occurs in the S phase is DNA replication.
  5. The goal of this process is to produce twice the amount of DNA that forms the basis of the daughter cell's chromosomal set.
  6. DNA replication begins when the regulated pre-replication complex attaches to the DNA in the G1 phase.
  7. In addition to DNA replication, cell proliferation continues during the S phase, producing the proteins and enzymes required for DNA synthesis.
