Question

What happens to cells if they lose too much water?

Open in App
Solution

Plasmolysis:

  1. Plasmolysis is the process by which cells in a hypertonic solution lose water.
  2. The cells of the body cannot operate adequately if they are deprived of water or gain extra water through osmosis.
  3. Outside the cell membrane, plant cells contain a strong stiff cell wall. This prevents the cell from bursting when it absorbs water via osmosis.
  4. The cell becomes hard as the pressure increases.

If a cell loses too much water:

  1. Plant cells that lose too much water through osmosis become less stiff, and the cell membrane finally separates from the cell wall.
  2. Severe water loss, which causes the cell wall to collapse, can result in cell death.
  3. The plasma membrane and protoplast of a cell detach from the cell wall when it suffers severe plasmolysis.
  4. Ctyorrhysis is the mechanism through which the cell wall collapses.
  5. The cell gets destroyed as a result of this.
  6. This is what happens when a plant wilts and dies from a lack of water.
