Question

What happens to the heat energy supplied to a solid once it starts melting ?

Open in App
Solution

  • The heat energy is supplied as latent heat of fusion. There is no change in the temperature till the entire solid has melted.
  • Latent heat of fusion is defined as the amount of heat gained by a solid object to convert into liquid form without the change in the temperature.
  • If the heat consumed by the substance is (Q), and m is the mass of the solid substance then the latent heat of fusion (L) is given by the formula: L= Q/m.
