What happens to the remnants of the ruptured Graafian follicle in the ovary?

Graafian follicle:

  1. It is the enlargement filled with cellular aggregates and nutritive fluid that contains the ovum.
  2. The release of the ovum from the ovary by the rupturing of the Graafian follicle is called ovulation.
  3. When ovulation occurs then the cells of the Graafian follicle get ruptured and transform into a structure called corpus luteum.
  4. The ruptured Graafian follicle develops into the corpus luteum which secretes a large amount of hormone called progesterone.
  5. This is essential for the maintenance of the endometrium membrane of the uterus and implantation of the fertilized egg.
