What happens to the viscosity and surface tension of a liquid with an increase in temperature?

Viscosity of a liquid:

  • Viscosity is the tendency of a liquid/gas to flow.
  • As the temperature increases, the energy between the molecules also increases thereby increasing the movement of the molecules. Thus, the viscosity of the fluid will decrease due to the ease in the movement of molecules.

Surface tension of a liquid:

  • Surface tension is the phenomenon that occurs when a liquid comes in a contact with the other phases.
  • On increasing the temperature, the movement of the molecules also increases due to which the intermolecular forces get disturbed as a result of which the molecule weakens. Thus, the surface tension of a liquid decreases.
