what happens when Bleaching powder is treated with water containing calcium and magnesium salts?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Water containing Calcium and Magnesium salts is known as hard water. The process of decreasing the hardness of water is known as softening, it involves decreasing the concentration of calcium and magnesium salts in water.

However, Bleaching powder is used for the disinfection purpose and it is added in the concentration of 2-5 ppm of water after the post-treatment. And hence it will not affect the hardness of the water.
