What happens when blue vitriol is heated

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Blue vitriol (copper sulphate ) is blue in colour as it contains 5 molecules of water of crystallization (chemical formula CuSO4.5H2O).When it is heated, it loses water of crystallization and becomes anhydrous CuSO4which is grey- white in colour.
The reaction is written as follows:

CuSO4.5H2O CuSO4 + 5H2OBlue vitrol Copper Water sulphate
