Question

what happens when
a plant cell is placed in hypertonic solution

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
When a plant cell is placed in hypertonic solution, the water will start moving out of the cytoplasm of the cell and then from the vacuoles due to osmosis. The plasma membrane will start to shrink away or detach away from the cell wall. This leads to a phenomenon called as plasmolysis and the cell in this condition is said to be plasmolysed. The turgor pressure by plasmolysis decreases when the protoplasm of the cell starts peeling away from the cell wall.It creates a gap between the cell wall and the cell membrane. Thus, the plant cell will shrink.
