Question

What happens when concentrated Sulphuric Acid is added to Sodium Chloride?

Open in App
Solution

  1. When concentrated Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) is added to Sodium chloride, the formation of Sodium Bisulphate and Hydrochloric acid will take place.
  2. In this reaction, concentrated Sulphuric acid acts as a strong oxidizing agent and Chloride ion acts as a weak reducing agent. With the help of a strong acid, protonation of H+ions will take place to form Sodium Bisulphate.

2NaCl(s)+conc.H2SO4(l)NaHSO4(aq)+HCl(g)SodiumSodiumChlorideBisulphate
