When dilute sulphuric acid is added to a mixture of iron fillings and sulphur powder heated to red hot followed by cooling​, iron reacts with sulphur to form iron sulphide, FeS. FeS formed reacts with sulphuric acid to form ferrous sulphate and release hydrogendisulphide gas.

Fe +S FeS
FeS + H2SO4 FeSO4 + H2S
