Question

What happens, when RBCs are placed in hypotonic solution

Open in App
Solution

Hypotonic solution:

  1. The solution outside the cell has a higher soluble concentration than inside the cell.
  2. Thus, the water molecules move outside the cell from inside.
  3. A cell placed in a hypotonic solution will swell due to the movement of water into the cell.
  4. When RBCs are placed in hypotonic solution, the free water will enter the cell, making it swell.
