A compound is a substance made up of two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio by weight. They are homogeneous and exhibit definite physical and chemical properties. Eg., water is a compound. It is made up of two elements hydrogen and oxygen, which combine chemically in a fixed ratio of 1:8 by weight. It possesses properties entirely different from the properties of hydrogen and oxygen.
