Question

What is a qualitative PCR and quantitative real-time PCR?

Open in App
Solution

PCR :

  1. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a widely used method for rapid production of millions to billions of copies (full or partial) of a specific DNA sample.
  2. This allows scientists to take a small sample of DNA and amplify it (or a portion of it) to a large enough amount to investigate in detail.
  3. Kary Mullis, an American scientist at Cetus Corporation, devised PCR in 1983.

Qualitative PCR:

  1. A qualitative PCR is one in which the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is used to determine the presence or absence of a specific DNA product.
  2. It's a procedure that's used when PCR is used for cloning or pathogen identification.

Quantitative PCR:

  1. Quantitative real-time PCR provides information that goes far beyond DNA detection.
  2. It shows how much of a specific gene or DNA is present in the sample.
  3. Quantitative real-time PCR allows for real-time measurement and detection of the PCR product while it is being synthesized.
