What is addiction and its type. Write the harmful effect of alcohol addiction.

A person who is habituated to a substance or practice, especially harmful ones is called an addict. Addiction is a social disease and adversely affects the health of a population, especially young people.
Types of Addictions: Today our youths are affected by three types of addictions:
(a) Drug addiction
(b) Alcohol addiction
(c) Tobacco addiction.

Alcoholism: Consumption of alcohol as a habit is called alcoholism. The drinkers begin with small doses and then start consuming large doses and become addicts. Alcohol addicts are also called alcoholics.
Effects of Alcohol: Alcohol is rapidly absorbed by the wall of the stomach and enters the bloodstream. Absorption is faster on empty stomach. The blood distributes it to all the body tissues within minutes where it mixes with water. A high level of alcohol causes a disturbance in thinking, irritability, reduced self-control, slurred speech, drowsiness, and difficulty in walking. It acts as a depressant on the central nervous system.


Dependence on Alcohol: The dependence on alcohol may be social, physical, or psychological. The dependence on alcohol initially starts due to the following reasons-
(1) Feeling of independence
(2) To break the monotony of daily life.
(3) Social pressure
(4) Liking the taste
Effect of alcohol on family and society:
(1) Alcohol is a costly beverage but alcoholics do not mind spending on it to satisfy their selfish desires.
(2) It creates all sorts of domestic problems such as quarrels and divorce, anxiety, frustration, and insecurity. Children may become antisocial.
(3) Alcoholism is associated with social crimes and erosion of normal inhibitions.
(4) Accidents on roads and in industries increase with the use of alcohol.
