What is an example of supercooling?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Supercooling is defined as the process of cooling a substance beyond its freezing point, without changing it into a solid state.
  2. The temperature of a supercooling substance increases as the solid transforms to liquid producing heat which is called latent heat.
  3. Latent heat will raise the temperature of supercooled substances.
  4. This is an exothermic process as a change of substances evolves heat to remain supercooled.
  5. An example of a supercooled liquid is Glass.
  6. Glass is an amorphous solid, which means it tends to flow slowly.
  7. Glass is having a non-crystalline structure and due to its supercoiling effect, it moves with extremely high velocity.
  8. The bottom portion of the window becomes thicker after many years because of its fluidity.
