It is a chemical bond formed between two atoms by the complete transfer of one or more electrons from one atom to the other as a result of which the atoms attain their nearest inert gas configuration.
Example: An ionic bond is formed between lithium and fluorine by the transfer of one electron from lithium to fluorine.
Lithium attains one positive charge - Li+ and fluorine attains one negative charge - FThe ionic compound LiF is formed by the electrostatic force of attraction between lithium ions and fluoride ions.
