Question

What is an oxidizing agent in Cl2+2I12Cl+I2?

Open in App
Solution

Oxidising agent = oxidise another reactant (makes it lose electron) and is itself reduced (gains electron).
So Cl2 gains 2 electrons to become 2 2Cl1 so it has been reduced. At the same time, it has taken these 2 electron from 2I to oxidise it to I2.
Therefore the Cl is the oxidising agent as it forced the 2I to lose electron, and gained 2 electron itself. 2I is the reducing agent.
