What Is Anoxygenic Photosynthesis?

Open in App
Solution

Anoxygenic Photosynthesis:

  1. IA phototrophic process in which light is captured and converted to ATP but oxygen is not produced is known as anoxygenic photosynthesis.
  2. In anoxygenic photosynthesis, light energy is converted into chemical energy by some bacteria without releasing oxygen.
  3. In anoxygenic photosynthesis, water is not used as an electron donor.
  4. Photosystem I is present and photosystem II is absent in anoxygenic photosynthesis.
  5. This type of photosynthesis takes place only in prokaryotes, whereas in eukaryotes photosynthesis process depends on chlorophyll.
  6. Examples: phototrophic purple bacteria, green sulfur bacteria, phototrophic heliobacter.
