Question

Where can anoxygenic photosynthesis be seen?

Open in App
Solution

Anoxygenic Photosynthesis:

  1. In this type of photosynthesis, H2O is not oxidized, hence O2 is not released. This process is called anoxygenic photosynthesis.
  2. It is based on electron donors, such as molecular hydrogen, sulphur compounds or organic compounds.

Occurrence:

  1. This form of photosynthesis is seen occurring frequently in microbes that are seen in the aquatic habitat.
  2. Green sulphur bacteria, green and red filamentous anoxygenic phototrophs are some examples in which anoxygenic photosynthesis is seen.
  3. In purple bacteria and green sulphur bacteria, the reducing agent used is sulphur.
