As we know that,

$C_v=\frac{f}{2}R$

whereas, $f$ is the degree of freedom.

• For monoatomic gases-
  

$f=3$

$\therefore C_v=\frac{3}{2}R$

• For diatomic gases-

$f=5$

$\therefore C_v=\frac{5}{2}R$

Hence the value of $C_v$ for monoatomic and diatomic gases are $\frac{3}{2}R$ and $\frac{5}{2}R$ respectively.
