Question

What is coagulation? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Coagulation is the precipitation of colloids by removal of the charge associated with colloidal particles.
Colloidal particles carry same charge on their surfaces. Due to charge, colloidal solution is stable. The electrostatic force of repulsion between similarly charged particles prevents them from coming closer to form larger particles. When charge is removed, the repulsion between them stops. The particles come closer, their size increases which results in precipitation.
