Question

What is delta G?

Open in App
Solution

Gibbs Free Energy (G)

  • It is the amount of energy in a system that can be used to do work as a result of a chemical process.

Change in Free energy (Delta G)

  • Free energy is generally given by the equation G=H-TS
  • Change in Gibbs free energy of a system is represented by delta G.
  • Free energy is defined as the change in the enthalpy (H) of the system minus the product of the temperature and the change in the entropy (S) of the system.
  • The sign for spontaneity is Delta G, and these are the two things that can influence it and are given by the formula:

G=H-TS

Conditions

  • If G>0; Reaction is Non-spontaneous
  • If G<0; Reaction is spontaneous.
  • If G=0; Reaction is in equilibrium.
