What is denitrification of nitrate reaction?
Open in App
Solution
Denitrification:
It is a microbial process in which nitrates (NO
3-
) and nitrites (NO
2-
) are converted to gaseous nitrogen (N
2
).
The organisms which carry out denitrification are called Denitrifiers.
Enzymes involved in the reaction are nitrite reductase, nitrate reductase, nitrous oxide reductase, and nitric oxide reductase.
Thiobacillus denitrificans
and
Micrococcus denitrificans
are examples of denitrifying bacteria.
