Dialysis is a process of separating small molecules from larger ones using a semipermeable membrane.
An artificial kidney works on the principle of dialysis. The patient's blood is led from the radial artery in his arm through the machine where the urea and excess salts are removed and the purified blood is returned to a vein in the same arm. In case of permanent damage to both the kidneys, dialysis is to be repeated for about twelve hours twice a week.
