Dear Student,
When two bodies approach each other, we draw a line joining the centres of the spheres which are going to collide. Now, if the direction of their velocities coincides with the line joining them, then they are said to be along the line of impact and if not, then they are not along the line of impact.
By definition, line of impact is the line which is common normal for surfaces are closest or in contact during impact.
Head on collisions or one-dimensional collisions - the velocity of each body just before impact is along the line of impact.
Non-head on collisions, oblique collisions or two-dimensional collisions - the velocity of each body just before impact is not along the line of impact.
The coefficient of restitution is a number which indicates how much kinetic energy remains after a collision of two objects.
