Question

What is difference between osmosis and diffusion?

Open in App
Solution

Osmosis:

  1. Osmosis is a process of movement of diffusion of solvent molecules from high-water gradient to low water potential through semipermeable membrane.
  2. Example of osmosis is absorption of water from the soil.

Diffusion:

  1. It is the movement of molecules from the higher concentration to the lower concentration.
  2. Example of diffusion include dipping of tea bag in hot water in which the tea diffuses into the hot water.

Osmosis

Diffusion

1. The moment of water or some other solvent can move from higher concentration to the lower concentration.1. The movement of any substance can move from higher concentration to the lowest.
2. Semi permeable membrane is needed.2. Semi permeable membrane is not needed.
3. Osmosis requires liquid medium3. Diffusion can occur place in any medium.
4. Hydrostatic pressure and turgor pressure opposes osmosis.4.Hydrostatic and turgor pressure are not applicable to diffusion.
5. The solvents concentration will not become equal on both sides of the membrane5. It equalizes the fill space available
