Question

what is difference between valence bond theory and valence shell electron paired repulsion theory

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

The main difference between VSEPR theory and VBT theory is that VSEPR theory describes the shape of the molecule whereas VBT explain the bonding in the molecule. The VSEPR theory predicts the geometry of molecules and polyatomic ions based on Lewis structure and charge clouds on central metal atom.
On the other hand, VBT explain how bonds are formed by mixing of orbitals to give hybrid orbitals. The hybridisation then gives the geometry of molecule and bond angles.
