Voluntary muscles:

  1. Voluntary muscles or striated muscles are composed of individual muscle fibers that contract when stimulated by branches of motoneurons or somatic motor neurons.
  2. This contraction is voluntary
  3. These are attached to bones
  4. For example, we can control the muscles in the arms and legs when we run, walk or jump.

Involuntary muscles:

  1. Muscles that are not under your conscious control.
  2. They are known as unstriated or smooth muscle fibers as they lack striations.
  3. These are attached to the walls of internal organs.
  4. They are responsible for such important activities as breathing, heartbeat, and digesting food
  5. Examples are smooth and cardiac muscles.
