What Is Endothelin?

Open in App
Solution

Endothelin:

  1. Endothelin are vasoconstricting peptides that are generated largely in the endothelium and play an important role in vascular regulation.
  2. Endothelin, which are generated by the endothelial cells of the renal blood arteries, DCT cells, and mesangial cells, are potent vasoconstrictor.
  3. Epinephrine, bradykinin, and angiotensin II are the hormones that cause endothelin to be released.
  4. It normally has little effect on blood pressure in healthy persons.
  5. Endothelin levels are persistently elevated in those with diabetes and renal dysfunction, causing salt retention.
  6. It also lowers GFR (Glomerular filtration rate) by damaging podocytes and causing efferent and afferent arterioles to vasoconstrict.
