Question

What is enthalpy used for?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Enthalpy is the thermodynamic entity which is calculated with the help of internal energy, pressure, and volume.
  2. Enthalpy can be defined as the sum of internal energy with the product of pressure and volume.
  3. Enthalpy of the system is denoted by the letter “H”.
  4. Mathematical expression used to calculate the change in enthalpy is H=E+PV, where H is the enthalpy, E is the internal energy, P is the pressure, and V is the volume.
  5. Enthalpy is used in determining whether the reaction is exothermic or endothermic in nature.
  6. It also helps in calculating the heat of the reaction.
  7. Change in enthalpy of the system is encountered when there is change occurs in states of matter.
  8. The heat flow in the calorimeter can also be calculated with the help of a change in enthalpy
