Question

What is equilibrium and why is it important?

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Definition of Equilibrium

  1. Equilibrium is the state of the reaction when the concentration rate of the forward reaction is equal to the backward concentration rate.
  2. The chemical equilibrium is dynamic because the reaction continues every minute without changing the properties of the system.
  3. To calculate the rate of reaction, we take the ratio of the concentration of product to the reactants.

Part 2: Importance of equilibrium

  1. Chemical equilibrium has its importance in each industrial process.
  2. It is used in the Haber's process which is majorly used in the production of Ammonia(NH3)
  3. It can also be used in the production of Sulphuric acid(H2SO4), and the process is called the contact process.
  4. In a chemical reaction it provides the stability.
  5. It also determines in which direction the reaction will shift.
