Fermentation is the process in which a substance breaks down into a simpler substance . Fermentation refers to the metabolic process by which organic molecules ( mainly carbohydrates, such as starch or a sugar) are converted into acids, gases, or alcohol in the absence of oxygen or any electron transport chain.

For example, yeast performs fermentation to obtain energy by converting sugar into alcohol.

The coenzyme regenerated by the process of fermentation is NADH

The two most common types of fermentation are (1) alcoholic fermentation and (2) lactic acid fermentation. (1) Alcoholic fermentation : the type of fermentation in which ethyl alcohol is the main end product .This is very common in yeast (unicellular fungus) and also seen in some bacteria
