Question

What is formed when potassium is heated strongly in oxygen?

Open in App
Solution

The reaction of alkali metals with oxygen:

  • When alkali metals react with oxygen, they form different oxides such as oxide, peroxide, or superoxide.

The reaction of potassium with oxygen:

  • When potassium (K) is heated strongly with oxygen(O2), then it forms potassium superoxide (KO2) as a product.
  • In the potassium superoxide, the oxidation number of K is +1 and O is -12 .
  • The chemical equation is as follows:

K(s)0+O2(g)0K+1O2-1(s)

Hence, Potassium superoxide (KO2) is formed when potassium is strongly heated in oxygen.
