What is gangue?

The natural substances in which metals or their compounds occur either in native sate or combined state are called minerals. The minerals aren't pure and contain different types of other impurities. The impurities which are combined with minerals are referred as gangue or matrix.

Example: The rock surrounding a deposit of Gold ($\mathrm{Au}$) is called gangue.
