The glycocalyx, also known as the pericellular matrix, is a glycoprotein and glycolipid covering that surrounds the cell membranes of some bacteria, epithelia, and other cells.
Functions of glycocalyx :-
1)It protects the plasma membrane from getting damaged by providing cushion around it.
2)It helps bacteria to adhere to the living and inert surfaces.
3)It also forms capsule around bacteria.
4)It also protects our eye cornea to get infected.
5)It helps the sperms in recognizing and binding to the eggs.
Hope this helps :)
