What is Hinsberg reagent?
Hinsberg’s reagent
Hinsberg’s reagent is benzene sulphonyl chloride (C6H5SO2Cl).
Characteristics of Hinsberg Reagent
Hinsberg reagent is used for the distinction of primary, secondary and tertiary amines and also for the separation of a mixture of amines.
Hinsberg reagent reacts with primary amines to form N-alkylbenzene sulphonamides which is soluble in alkali.
Hinsberg reagent reacts with secondary amines to form N,N−dialkylbenzene sulphonamides which is insoluble in alkali.
Tertiary amines do not react with benzene sulphonyl chloride.
