Hinsberg’s reagent is benzene sulphonyl chloride (C6H5SO2Cl).

Characteristics of Hinsberg Reagent

Hinsberg reagent is used for the distinction of primary, secondary and tertiary amines and also for the separation of a mixture of amines.

Hinsberg reagent reacts with primary amines to form N-alkylbenzene sulphonamides which is soluble in alkali.

Hinsberg reagent reacts with secondary amines to form N,Ndialkylbenzene sulphonamides which is insoluble in alkali.
