A group of carbon compound having same general formula and same functional group is called homologous series. The members of homologous series are called homologue.

For example: Alkane: ${\text{CH}}_4$ –methane, ${\text{C}}_2{\text{H}}_6$ – ethane, ${\text{C}}_3{\text{H}}_8$–propane.

Characteristics of homologous series-

• They have same general formula for all compounds. They have same functional group.
• They have same chemical but different physical properties.
• They have difference of –${\text{CH}}_2$ between two successive members and difference between their mass is 14 amu.
