Question

What is implantation? What role does the umbilical cord play in the development of the foetus

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Fertilization of the egg takes place in the fallopian tube and then it travels to the uterus where the zygote gets attached to the walls of the uterus. This process is called implantation.

Role of the umbilical cord - Umbilical cord connects a foetus to its mother inside the womb. It supplies nutrients including calories, protein, fats and minerals to the baby. It also transfers waste materials and deoxygenated blood from foetus to the mother.
